Dear Hailey,
I hear the terms “heart chakra and third eye” a lot in yoga class. I get they are wheels of energy on my body but have no idea what they do or why my yoga teacher will ask us to focus on them and breathe. Can you help me out? I just got on my spiritual path and am creating a new lifestyle for myself. I’m excited to learn all I can.
Signed, Spiritual Path
Dear Spiritual Path,
Congratulations for deciding to live a spiritual lifestyle! I can remember my first introduction to yoga. I met Guru Singh Das and he told me if I could find a total of 6 students for a class he would teach me Kundalini yoga. Two weeks later I was sitting in half-lotus pose front and center with five of my friends for our first class. He began by having us breathe into our root chakra then up and out our crown chakra around the front of our body and back up the spine again. I quickly learned, like you, I was moving my energy through my body with my breath. I realized the breath energized my body. The chakra system keeps our energy flowing and when it becomes sluggish we will begin to experience emotional, mental, physical and spiritual dis-ease. Your yoga teacher most likely has you focus on your heart chakra and breathe (meaning take your internal focus to your heart chakra and allow your breath to flow in & out of your heart) to open your overall flow of energy throughout your body and bring more love into your being. According to my heavenly guides, it is our heart chakras where all energy is filtered and transformed to love. It is in the heart we are able to shift from lack to abundance, dis-ease to flow, fear to love, etc. Your third eye or brow chakra holds the wisdom of your spiritual nature. It is here you can “see” beyond your ego and into your Soul. Your intuition lives here facilitating your ability to see things from a spiritual point of view. Focusing your awareness and allowing your breath to flow in and out of your third eye will bring spiritual trust, wisdom and truth allowing you to move through the world as you were meant to be, a spiritual being.
In addition to those two chakras there are five others for a total of seven major chakras. If you would like to create an energizing flow throughout your chakra system, begin by moving your focus to your first chakra, your root chakra, located at the base of your spine. Notice what color you see at that area of your body. Inhale and exhale into your root chakra a bright fire engine red until the chakra sustains that color.
Now move your focus to your second chakra located just below your belly button. Notice what color you see at that area of your body. Inhale and exhale into your second chakra the color of crayola orange until the chakra sustains that color.
Now move your focus to your third chakra just above your belly button, your solar plexus. Notice what color you see at that area of your body. Inhale and exhale into your second chakra the bright yellow of the sun until the chakra sustains that color.
Now move your focus to your fourth chakra, your heart chakra. Notice what color you see at that area of your body. Inhale and exhale into your fourth chakra a beautiful grass green until the chakra sustains that color.
Now move your focus to your fifth chakra, your throat chakra. Notice what color you see at that area of your body. Inhale and exhale into your fifth chakra the aqua blue color of the warm Caribbean waters until the chakra sustains that color.
Now move your focus to your sixth chakra, your brow chakra, your third eye. Notice what color you see at that area of your body. Inhale and exhale into your sixth chakra the deep purple color of indigo until the chakra sustains that color.
Now move your focus to your seventh chakra, your crown chakra. Notice what color you see at that area of your body. Inhale and exhale into your seventh chakra the color violet until the chakra sustains that color.
When you have each chakra resonating it’s natural color, take a deep breath and pull root chakra by holding your breath and pinching your sphincter tight for 5-10 seconds then with a long exhale allow your your breath to flow from your root chakra up your spine, out your crown chakra then around the front of your body. When you get back to your root chakra repeat the sequence 4-6 times. Now thank yourself for being present and open your eyes. Can you feel the tingling of your energy flowing freely through your body energizing you? I bet you will be pop on all day long!
Happy Chakra Cleansing, Hailey
